Looking forward to getting stuck into Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami over the next week on holiday. His novels are always bonkers but engaging.

Anybody got anything worth reading on modern economics? Not exactly sexy Saturday night reading, but something I want to know more about. What, like *actual* economics? It’s a pretty broad church mate. Anything in particular? How about these? Misbehaving by Thaler Rise of the Robots by Martin Ford You’re welcome 😇

i've been reading like a madman, as this update will show; read more than just these, but the following only bear mentioning... the good, and the completely dreadful.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens • Pretty damn good. Straight-up, adept American historical crime novel. Reminiscent of early Pat Conroy novels. Just read that it will get a screen adaptation.
Borne by Jeff VanderMeer • UGH. Think I'm done with this author. Yes, he's a clever writer, a great wordsmith even, but this book felt pandering, even mocking. Seemed like he was using "humanity disconnect" as a reasonably acceptable evolution of humanity.
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman • Really, really enjoyable. Really. Love most of what I've read by him. I'll continue with his past and future books.
Dawn, Adulthood Rites and Imago, of the Xenogenesis Trilogy by Octavia E. Butler • 5 stars, for each book. Brilliant.
Gather the Daughters by Jennie Melamed • Good, but disturbing AF. Can't come up with a good music reference for this one, which might be rather telling.
Finished the Inheritance series by N. K. Jemisin. Books 2 & 3 were far more entertaining than the first. All caught up with her works for now, at least until I dig in to her short story collection How Long 'Til Black Future Month?
Nightflyers by George R. R. Martin • MEH. Not great, middling at best. Looking forward to Fire & Blood though!
Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward • IDK, this one left me a little cold. Wanted to like it more, but something about it, IDK... I was a bit nonplussed.
Sleeping Giants and Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel • Good. Looking forward to finishing the Themis Files, but I think I'll wait for book three in paperback.
Enclave , Outpost and Horde, Ann Aguirre's Razorland trilogy. Enjoyable enough. Basically a YA version of Justin Cronin's Passage trilogy, but not a total ripoff.
Lethal White by Robert Galbraith • Very good, but also somewhat predictable, possibly soapy. Enjoyable nonetheless. I do like Rowling's crime novels.
The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang • Brilliant, humorous in parts, but utterly brutal overall. It's the first in a series, but just the one book so far. The Dragon Republic out in June 2019.
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie • It didn't kill me, but I probably won't read another book by her again. Well, maybe And Then There Were None, that does seem kinda interesting.
The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu, the 2nd book in the Dandelion Dynasty trilogy. Book one, The Grace of Kings was great-- the follow up was FANTASTIC. Can't wait for the 3rd book. Just picked up a collection of his short stories, haven't yet begun.
The Reminders by Val Emmich • Good. Light reading. Bog Standard Fiction? Nothing really exciting, just a good story.
Never Alone by Elizabeth Haynes • UGH. What happened, lady? You were one of my favorite British authors, but this was a stinker. Filled to the dreaded DNF pile. Felt more like chick lit than a thriller. Sad.
Currently reading: The Monster Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson. The Traitor Baru Cormorant was excellent, and so far book 2 is well in that vein.

Step by Step by Simon Reeve.... amazing how this guy got to where he is today given his history of mental illness and no university education.
The Incurable Romantic...a psychologist writes about some of his patients' troubles with love and obsession. Probably the best book I read this year.
The Fault in their Stars...two young cancer sufferers fall in love.....great book.

Got "Shoe Dog" lined up, the missus loved it.
Also got "A Little Life" after a strong recommendation from a close friend. I read the first amazon review and it said it's pretty homo but a beautiful book about brotherhood. Will give it a go, nonetheless.
Picked up the new Game of Thrones book too, I really enjoyed the big encylopedia based around the all the kings previous to Robert Baratheon from the very start. So looking forward to a more detailed version around the first three kings.
And The Beastie Boys Book by Mike D and MCA. Nice combination of a coffee table book and a proper autobiography.

If you’re into Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - which I know several people on the board are - check out ‘The Spy And The Traitor’ by Ben Macintyre
Absolutely riveting cold war double agent spy story made all the more jaw dropping by it being non-fiction. Highly recommended.
