I really don’t know where to start with this amazing human being, so here it goes….in memory of the EXTRAORDINARY Andrew Weatherall, WE ARE TOGETHER!!
Andrew Weatherall meant many things to countless amounts of people! To me he was a mentor and a friend who never ceased to amaze me with his endless stream of knowledge on so many subjects - literature, poetry, history, style, comedy and of course - music - to name but a few. He was a true visionary! Even though in my eyes, Andrew was the greatest and most influential DJ that ever lived, DJing was just something he did. In the same way boxing was just something Muhammad Ali did - he was much greater than that! Andrew was UNCLASSIFIABLE. It's that simple. As far back as I can remember he was always so far ahead of the curve in every sense whether it was through the music he listened to or played as a DJ, what he read or the films he was watching or how he dressed…the thing is, Andrew was incredibly authentic and unique in everything that he touched…. That’s just the way he was and thats just a few of the reasons why he was loved by so many people.
Personally I feel his generosity of spirit was second to none! There were times during our relationship, which spanned 30 years, that I’ll never forget! When I needed someone to talk to, I often turned to Andrew! Within 5 mins I was cured! The best therapy anyone could receive for the price of a phone call. He always had the time and the answers - his advice was incredibly profound and he made me feel that everything was going to be just fine. For that reason alone I will be forever grateful! He was a true friend.
Back in 1990, as a 21 year old musical upstart bursting with energy, I was very fortunate to witness Andrew DJ for the first time in a London club hosted by another brilliant character, Charlie Hall - on that night I bore witness to a DJ (who I knew very little about) deliver a set that changed everything! She’s a Rainbow (twice), My Bloody Valentine, That Petrol Emotion, WestBam, Nitzer Ebb, Italo house, Chris and Cosey, Belgian new beat, Chicago house and Detroit techno and a list of records that I still don’t know the name of to this day, stitched together perfectly. My mind was completely blown - in just two hours, my life changed forever! I’d never felt so happy and I would never be the same again. After the third encore I sheepishly approached him in total awe with a face that deserved a gold medal for facial gymnastics at the Acid House Olympics! I asked him if he’d like to come to Belfast to play at Sugar Sweet (considering Belfast at that time was a no-go area for a lot of artists and performers) I was met with pure enthusiasm and he quickly gave me his phone number - I trotted away like a cat that just found the cream! A few days later I called him and he told me he’d love to but could I call him back in 30 mins as Coronation Street had just started that was Andrew! Before I knew it my partner in crime, Iain McCready and I had his flight booked and he arrived in Belfast sporting his black leather trousers, biker boots, a black and white striped Breton top, leather waist coat and his Jim Morrison shoulder-length corkscrew hair and fully equipped to show us how it was done! Magical was an understatement and all we had to pay him was £350 - cheap at a tenth of the price -considering the impact he had on everyone in that room! From that moment he went on to play in Belfast at least 2-3 times a year and he became an idol to many of the local natives but most importantly for me we became friends. There was simply no one like him! His intelligence was unsurmountable, his humour infectious and his knowledge of music and everything else inspirational. I learnt more from Weatherall in one year than I did in my 5 years at secondary school and those 'classes' with him usually took place in a dusty basement with a joint and a cup of coffee. I rarely spoke - I just listened! Sometimes because I couldn’t get a word in edgeways and sometimes because I was in total awe and quietly intimidated. He wasn't in any way preachy, just enthusiastic as he waxed lyrical about the book he had just read, or the track he had just discovered, and that he wanted you to read or listen to because he wanted you to taste what he just had just experienced. That right there is the definition of his Generosity Of Spirit always turned up to 11, 24/7, 365 days a year. You always left his company with fire in your belly, fully invigorated with a fresh lust for life for the road ahead.
As a young DJ and up and coming remixer/producer, Andrew taught me a valuable lesson that I always try and pass on to any other young enthusiastic musical upstart - forge your own path by being you! That doesn’t mean to say that you shouldn’t borrow or steal from any inspiring sources that speak directly to your soul… Believe me, Andrew was one of the biggest magpies I've ever known but no matter what he produced, his music always sounded like Andrew Weatherall - no matter who he collaborated with, Hugo Nicolson, Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns, Keith Tenniswood , Timothy FairPlay or Nina Walsh, his music was always carved with Weatherall’s signature Indian ink. He was a master of echo and space with depth that tickled the depths of your soul and a master arranger to boot. Andrew is the reason why I used the world of cinema in my productions. He urged me to find my own sound and not be the derivative of the derivative - Andrew is the reason why I sang on the Holy Pictures… Andrew is the reason I discovered King Tubby, Primal Scream, Charlie Feathers, Can , Bill Laswell, My Bloody Valentine, Delia Derbyshire, Charlie Megira, Joe Meek,The Cramps, NEU, Harpers Bizarre, Jah Wobble, Julee Cruise, Caberet Nocturne, KL(AÜS ), The Fauns, The Flamin Gods, Kadam, Colouration etc etc - I could literally go on all day. Yesterday another dear friend, Matty Skylab called me up and asked me to make him an AW inspired mixtape - I quickly compiled a playlist titled THE SONGS THAT ANDREW TAUGHT US… After 15 mins I stopped at 90 songs…I hadn’t even begun!
On New Years Eve I sent him a text like I always did…little did I know it would be the last. -
"Happy New Year Andrew! Thank you for being a good friend to me when I needed it most. Love , David x"
Andrew: "Rarely there when you want me … always there when you need me . Take reassurance in the glory of the moment and the forever promise of tomorrow. Proud to count you as a friend. Happy new year to you and yours. X"
To sign of I'm gonna do a quick lyrical remix from the words of BP Fallon from a track called Henry McCulloch that Andrew remixed for us a couple of years back…..
I'm very blessed that Andrew was my friend since 1990, we were very lucky to travel the path and meet magical people along the way… Andrew, I salute you, it was always magnificent, I’ll see you when the time comes! X
