You can't make money with other people's tracks. That’s what my Dad said to me in the early 90’s when I was a resident in a London club. I took his advice and jacked it in. ☹️ Not going to be your epitaph then I take it?

He says himself it’s the artists that have registered with mixcloud that get paid. So that’s how they are building their ID database and getting the visa details of artists. It should be obvious to anyone on here as to the problems with this - people who don’t want to register with mixcloud, credits for remixes, edits, old tracks, tracks digweed doesn’t want to ID, record labels who mastered and promo’ed a track etc etc. Damo’s edit from bunker 3 is a great example - who gets paid? Damo didn’t make the two tracks but he did put them together and it got played. Does he deserve a slice? But if he was getting paid wouldn’t the people who made the tracks kick off? Do the labels who signed the tracks get paid? They should be pissed if not for sure. Ergo it’s bullshit really. Out of that nice 65% a couple of people will get a few pennies. The rest is in a nice interest accruing account for mixcloud. In Digger’s mind it’s probably better than nothing and he clearly hopes it’ll take over as the main model of distribution (and it probably will tbh if enough of the big players do it) but I think they’ll be in for a shock numbers wise. The hardcore will sign up. The rest will just get free mixes from other people. An interesting aside is that Diggers will be financially encouraged to play more bedrock tracks out in his mixes since the ID system will mean Bedrock / he gets paid more. You’ve got to wonder if he’ll keep things up when he’s playing out again too. That mixcloud subscription is going to look pretty stupid in 3 months time when they are all playing out again and it gets dropped like a hot potato.

Select existed before the virus though.
I was impressed with Mixcloud's app for remembering where I was in an older mix after listening to different one in between. Soundquality leaves a lot to be desired though.

Lol I’m sure it did. That makes it all the more hypocritical.
So it existed already yet none of the big names touched it with a 10 ft barge pole. Amazingly now they aren’t playing out it’s all ‘Supports the artists! Sign up to mixcloud! Just ignore my 10%!’. Didn’t they care about artists getting paid before the virus? lol.

Just to point out that I’m not against paying for mixes for the artists to get paid. Show me a bullshit free system where everyone gets their cut and I’ll sign up nae bother.
It’s the utter bullshit and ulterior motives surrounding this that’s getting my back up.

I'd say Digweed, Sasha and Moudaber are big names.

I'd say Digweed, Sasha and Moudaber are big names. As far as I know, Diggers supported it by...... releasing transitions on it 3 days early aye?

Ditto with those other two. Transitions never had an official Soundcloud though, In the Mood and LNOE do.

Ok. So hardly embracing it with both arms then aye? I sure hope all those artists got paid enough in those three exclusive days to put food on the table. Lol.
No frequent exclusive content updates to me suggests they were dipped the proverbial toe in and doing it to get data metrics and some spare change in the back pocket so I’m still gonna file it under ‘not touched with a 10ft barge pole’ IMO.

Mixcloud's supposed to pay royalties from free listens too mind.

As much as it pains me to say it but Wally has some decent points.

Mixcloud's supposed to pay royalties from free listens too mind. ‘Supposed to’ - Given the murkiness of the Select payment system (there is literally zero documentation on it - I read two terms and condition contracts to see how it worked and there’s nothing), I reckon that’s bullshit. Unless they use advertisting revenue to pay for it, it’s a broken business model. Or they can cover all those artist charges with the select 65% because the payments are so small and infrequent, they still get to keep, say, 60%+ of it which kinda proves my point of shadiness with select.

Not judging anyone who’s subscribed btw. More power to you. Just don’t kid yourself it’s for the artists or some noble benevolent cause.

I'm doing it for the ease. No finding the Bunker-mixes later before they get deleted, all in one place etc. Worth 4 quid IMO.

My only issue is that I like to have an offline mp3 version.
Everything is moving to streaming these days.
