Finished The Martian. Loved it. Great read.
Currently half way through Consider Phlebas. Which, so far is great.

Finished 'The Shankill Butchers' over the weekend. Another brown stain on the crown.
Fascinating and horrific at the same time.

Recently finished N.K. Jemisin's The Dreamblood Duology. Fantastic. The second book definitely creepier than the first.
Currently reading The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson. Seems disturbing and highly entrenched in politics, but I'm less than 1/4 into it. A lot could change.

Tales From Acorn Wood: Rabbit's Nap by Julia Donaldson
Exciting read, if a little short.

The Twelve-Mile Straight by Eleanor Henderson was very good. Deftly written soap opera-esque story about 1930s racial inequalities within rural Georgia (US). Difficult to read at times; if not the subject matter, then the authentic-seeming southern dialogue and overall writing. Yeah, I'm gonna check this out actually. Just finished a Southern fiction anthology called Crossroads - which was ace - so I'm up for more of the same. If you're into books about that area generally, Deep South by Paul Theroux is worth a look. I'm currently working through Remotely Controlled by Dr Aric Sigman and Irresistable by Adam Alter, the former about the effects of television on children's brains and the latter about our addictions to modern technology. I've also recently read Negroland by Margo Jefferson, The Murder of Sonny Liston by Shaun Assael (both very enlightening and shocking in places) and the autobiography of David Rodigan. All recommended. Thanks slaw. I'll check out Theroux. Michael Farris Smith is my current favorite Southern American writer ( Rivers, Desperation Road). He has a new book coming out in March, The Fighter. Recommended

I'm about 1/2 into Iain M. Banks' Against a Dark Background. It's a bit goofy-- is that common in his books? In the Culture series?

I don't read a lot of 'sci-fi' (speculative fiction?), but I really enjoyed
Version Control by Dexter Palmer Void Star by Zachary Mason The Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer -- I think one of these is being made into a movie

I'm about 1/2 into Iain M. Banks' Against a Dark Background. It's a bit goofy-- is that common in his books? In the Culture series? I haven’t read this but I see it’s not part of the Culture series and the writing style in this book is different from others that he’s written. Of the three Culture books ive read, each has been refreshingly different to the last, which is good as you want it to hold your interest if you’re going to read a whole series of them. Reviews on Good Reads suggests that Aganist a Dark Background isn’t indicative of the Culture series.

But the author loves it, and really good reviews too. Out in theatres in the US now, and in Netflix elsewhere March 13.

It's vagueness was somewhat frustrating, BUT that really got my imagination going in numerous directions. I haven't yet read books 2 and 3, but will.
