Same in Oz mate. There's only really 2 I've come across that are decent and even then as you say are nothing like UK joints. I have no idea why they can't carry the concept abroad. Same with bacon, sausages, pork pies and black pudding. All pig related too! You'd clean up here with a UK style chain of curry houses. There's one here called British India that's quite close but still just not quite there. Saw Russel Crowe in there on his own a while back. Klang. Doing a pretty good job of not looking like Russell Crowe to be fair. The girls at the bar couldn't keep it to themselves though.

Gordon Ramsay’s India show was brilliant. Man went all in and wasn’t a dick about it. Is that the one where that woman tried to beat the world record for chilli eating and when she didn't she got all upset so decided to rub them in her eyes to break a different record? Yup yup. Climbs a massive tree to collect ants for a pickle and even partook in that nutty bull racing they do in Kerala. I was impressed. Things I would never even think of doing as an Indian. Gonna search out that Rick Stein show.

Haha do like a go at making my own. I'm always pissed that it's never EVER like the ones you have in the restaurants. Even though they say they are. Why is that? Can't be that fucking hard. I'm guessing it's because Rick Stein's recipes are for Indian food and not BIR (British Indian Restaurant) curries. Different style. BIR curries use a base gravy which takes the Indian food to another level - the one you're after. In Grant's view, that's obviously a lower level, but many prefer the BIR style. There are various YouTube vids on how to make the base gravy. Once you've got it, you'll get that restaurant taste. I love a British curry, I just loved a few of the dishes I’ve made myself from that Rick Stein book more

Had a bottle of bhoot jalukya (ghost pepper) pickle from the streets of Assam. One single drop of the oil in my instant ramen, was hallucinating for about 10 mins and thought I had gone dead my ears were ringing so hard. The next day wasn’t pretty either, had to WFH. The thing was it was delicious and for some reason I had to keep going in for more.

Agree. Those super hot chillies are usually really tasty, but a price must be paid lol.

I remember being in California and coming across a curry house and got a bit excited at trying out an American style curry. First thing was the smell coming up to the place. Just wasn't that rich smell you get from a UK curry house. Smelt more like a jar of Patak's. Second thing was the curry... Disappointing on all levels - curries, breads and poppadoms particularly. Wasn't just one curry house either. Tried a few and they were all the same. California isn't great for Indian. There's a few places in the South Bay that are good, given the large Indian population that have come over to work in tech, but most aren't worth the time.

Yeah I struggled with Indian when I was living in California, nothing compared to what was in NYC and Boston. I also couldn’t bring myself to pay $15-20 for things like dosas. The dim sum, pho and Korean bbq made up for it though, big time. Was shocked when my friend told me this was pretty close to SF and was as legit as the one in Madras: thalappakatti.us/Worth a visit once things open up, JP.

Yeah that's the area I'm speaking to, Rhouses. Fremont, Milpitas. You can find good Indian down that way. So many Indians have moved here in recent years. Whether permanently or on H1B1 visas. We should have better options. Up this way it's pretty bleak unless you want to spend good coin on one of the more region-specific spots. Your standard British-style curry house spots are few and far between. But yeah we're not short on food options so whatever I guess.

Ordered a takeaway curry last night.
Utter dross... could've cooked a better Korma & Bhuna.
Exciting I know.
