The TyrellN6 and Zebralette are reasonable free synths, 303.
Dexed (DX7 emulator) is also quite a bit of fun

this looks interesting ...
My studio partner has one of these, so I have access to it whenever. It's a very deep machine. It was a personal fave of Mike Huckaby, may he rest in peace.

I've actually had that before, which is what convinced me to get the starter version... Anyone have ay good reads on sound design / synthesis or the like? It's a little disheartening when everything sounds like a preset, and you have no real idea how to tailor the sound properly.
Honestly, there's tonnes of tutorials about this on YouTube, but my recommendation is just to muck about.
Learn one or two synths really well.
Seeing as you're figuring out Ableton, there's tonnes of great techniques for audio manipulation and sound design.
Give me a shout if you need a hand.

How is the young un, Jay? Amazing. I really lucked out. He's a really good kid. Smart, loves music and very independent. Talks up a storm for a two and a half year old. He's definitely made me less of a man child. Haha.

hey loopy, hope all is well, you still have a job through all of this?
apparently i need a studio partner lol. i'm honestly still figuring out all the stuff i have now. i could probably use a dedicated drum machine so i could jam out more of my arrangements and would love an octatrack, but it's so unnecessary at this stage. if you have any stems/samples you don't want from all of this gear, feel free to send them my way.

Sadly not. I was working full time in my standard industry (IT) as a contractor making pretty good money up until the end of December.
Long story short, my immediate manager who was Aussie, had his grandmother die and he had to return to Australia to go to the funeral and deal with her estate as well. He was only meant to be away for a month but I gather it took longer so they let him go. We got on really well. In the meantime, the company I was working for promoted a guy who started after me who started micromanaging me and throwing his weight around. He was an asshole. So in the end, even though they needed me he came up with some bullshit reason to not extend my contract. C'est la vie.
I was in the process of interviewing and in the final stages with a few companies when all of this bullshit came down the pipe. That threw a wrench into my finding a job easily. I'm still applying, but these are uncertain times. Fortunately, I'm getting employment insurance and the government has said they're not taking anyone off it while this goes on, so I'm able to just cover my bills.

that sucks, it's been a tough ride for a lot of people. we're looking at starting to reopen in stages next week, so hopefully in the next month or so the economy starts picking up a little. ontario will probably be a bit behind alberta, but not by much i'm sure. good luck with the job search, at least you've got your head above water still.

i listened to it twice, please take any feedback i give you with a grain of salt as i barely know what i'm talking about.
i like the track, the mix sounds really good, nice and clean. and i always enjoy apollo samples. there were a couple things that i thought would help regarding the arrangement.
one, it's a little long and while the groove with the bassline is nice, it gets a bit repetitive over the length of the track. i'd try a little automation on it (filters, decay, delays, etc.) to keep it interesting and edit it down to 6 minutes. the intro and the break are both longer than they need to be.
the second thought i had was to put more of the pad and the piano melody into the break. i was waiting for a really lush break and i think it would work well.
overall, it's a good effort and i like it. what did you use to make it? all ableton instruments or any outboard stuff?

Nice one, 303. Not for me, its my brother. I'll pass the feedback along. Sounded to me like it was missing a hook or something. He's got a simple setup, Ableton, Push 2 and a midi keyboard. He's had stuff out on Manual Music before but tied up with kids and less time to play recently.
Thanks for that mate, appreciated.
